MySewnet-FlannelCape-01092024-1 (1).jpgThis cape wraps you up in warmth and style! Learn to make a versatile button-down cape that can be worn three ways: buttoned down the center, draped over one shoulder, or unbuttoned as a cozy lap blanket.

What you need:
  • One piece of fabric (either wool or acrylic fleece) cut 82 inches long by 28 inches wide
  • Five one-inch buttons
  • Sewing thread and serger thread to match your fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Serger (for rolled edge)
Finish the Edges
  1. Set up your serger for a 3-thread rolled edge with appropriate settings for your fabric.
  2. Serge along the two long edges to make a rolled edge.
  3. Set up your sewing machine for a reinforced straight stitch and stitch across the width of the fabric 5 inches from each short end.
Fringe

The fringe will give your wrap a softer look.

  1. Fleece Fabric: Cut ¼ inch strips from the end of the fabric to the stitching line to form the fringe.
  2. Wool fabric: Remove the cross threads from the end of the fabric with a pin to form the fringe.
Buttonholes
  1. Mark the position for the buttonholes starting 4¼ inches from one end of the fabric next to the fringe and 2 inches in from the long edge. Mark a total of 5 buttonholes that are 4¼ inches apart.
  2. Make the buttonholes using the appropriate size settings for your buttons and start by placing the needle in the fabric at the marked dot. The machine will sew backwards first so your finished buttonhole will be one inch from the edge.
Buttons
  1. Fold the ends of the wrap over so the buttonholes are laying directly on top of the other end of the wrap.
  2. Mark the center of the buttonhole where the button will be sewn on.
  3. Sew the 5 buttons on at the marks.
