Positive Affirmation Quilt: Quilting Meets QR Code Magic

Make this quilt for yourself or give it to someone dear to you. Every Qr-code contains a positive Affirmation to brighten up the day and to strengthen confidence! Check out this video to help you with creating a QR Code

Materials needed for the quilt: 

• White fabric for the Embroidery,15 squares at least 8”x 8” (20x20cm) 
• 15 squares of cut-away stabilizer the same size as fabric squares 
• Border and sashing fabric 38 rectangles 2 ¼"x 6½”(6x17cm)(medium purple) 
• Corner square fabric 24 squares 2 ¼"x2 ¼" (6x6cm) dark purple) 
• Fabric for backing 28”x43” (70x110cm) 
• Four squares 6”x6” (15x15cm) from backing fabric for hanging sleeve corners 
• Thin fusible batting same size as backing 
• Fabric for binding 4 strips 2”x 44” (5x110 cm) (dark purple) 
• Black embroidery thread

Making the affirmation QR codes

1. Open the mySewnet app. Click on Embroidery.
   
   
2. Click on QR Code Generator.
   
   
3. Select text (if you click on the symbol on the right side of the text a drop-down menu will show other alternatives, like Website URL, mail etc.)
   
4. Write your text in the text box. The more text you add, the more complicated the QR-pattern will become. When finished, click on done on the keyboard and then on the arow at the bottom of the screen.
   
5. In the Choose Stitch panel you have two options. The left one will stitch out the QR-code in two colors. This is best if your fabric has a busy pattern since the embroidery will cover it to make the reading of the code easier.
6. Since we will be using a White background, we will select the one at the right, who only uses black for the Stitch out.
   
   
7. Use the slider to set the size to approx. 4” (10cm)
   
8. On the bottom of the screen there are two options: The paper plane will send it directly to your machine and the cloud will send it to your mySewnet cloud storage.
9. Since we will make several Qr codes I saved it on my cloud storage. 
10. Save the embroidery file with a suitable name I used the same name as the text in the code, but you can choose any name of course.
    
    
11. When the file is saved you will get a confirmation message. The file will be saved in VP4-format.
    
12. Continue to make the other QR-codes. Of course you can add any text you like! Tip: click on the back arrow to go back and make the next QR-code

Preparing the files for stitch out 

13. If you have a connected machine, you can send the embroidery files directly from the Cloud to your machine, but since we want to resize them if needed to be all at the same size, we want to download them to the computer. 

Downloading the files: 

14. Log in to www.mysewnet.com  

15. Click on My Dashboard. 

16. Click on Cloud. 

17. Scroll down to the OR Code Creator folder.

18. Click on the folder to open it. Here you can see all the Embroidery files you have created. 

19. To download them, click on the three dots and select Download.

20. Double click on the downloaded file and it will open in your embroidery program.

21. Make sure the file is at the right size (close to 4x4” or 100mm) Otherwise resize it. 

22. To be able to stitch out the file we need to export it in your preferred format. Click on File and Export. 

23. A dialog box will open. Select the File Format and click on OK.

Stitching out the Embroideries 

24. Hoop Stabilizer and fabric in a 120x120mm hoop.

25. Stitch out the embroidery. It is only 1 color 

26. Unhoop the fabric and cut out a 6½” (17cm) square with the Qr-code centered. 

27. Continue to stitch out the rest of the Qr-codes and make squares. 

Putting the quilt together 

28. Lay out the blocks, border/sashing, and corner pieces in the right order, see image below. 

29. Sew together in rows. There are two types of rows, Border/sashing and corner squares and Border/sashing and embroidered squares. See image below. Sew them together with a 3/8” (1cm) seam allowance. 

30. Press the seam allowance towards the border/sashing. You can also press the seam allowances apart if you prefer that. 

31. Sew the rows together to make the quilt top. Press the seam allowances towards the border/sashing strips. (or apart if you did that in the previous step).

32. Place the backing on an ironing board wrong side up. Place the fusible batting on top, glue side down and fuse them together.

33. Place the quilt top on top of the batting right side up.

34. Pin the layers together. 

35. Quilt with straight stitch in the “ditch” between the Qr-code squares and the border/sashing. Stitch line shown in bright green for better visibility. Make a topstitch close to the edge around the quilt to hold the layers together. 

Making the hanging sleeve corners: 

Hanging sleeve corners is an easy solution to be able to nag your quilt on the wall. When the binding is added, just measure the distance between the edges of the corners, cut a rod with that length and put it under the corner triangles. Make one more to put at the bottom of your quilt to add weight and making the quilt hanging straight. 

36. Fold all four 6”x6” (15x15cm) squares diagonally. 

37. Pin one in each corner, raw edges even at the outside.
